In Christmas 1956 we were
the rawest intake at the RAC Trg depot with the 16/5th Lancers in Catterick, having
been in the Army for 3 weeks. On Boxing Day we all marched to the Cookhouse
immediately after breakfast. On arrival the Cook Sgt took us to a huge
pile of empty (used) tin cans(Baked beans Tinned Tomatoes etc),about 8ft
high and stretching about 30yards. We were told to get a pale of water
each and rinse out each tin can, then form a new pile of clean used tin
cans. Remember this was the days of Nat Service so one of the older recruits
asked "Why are we doing this Sarge?". The reply was "Hygiene Laddy,- to
keep the flies off." The pile was covered in ice and snow as anyone having
served in Catterick during the winter will know. Even an Eskimo fly would
have had given that particular pile of tin cans a miss, It is the one Boxing
Day that I know exactly where I was and what I was
doing.
If you have a anecdote, funny
story, limerick or song that you remember from your service, we would like
to publish it.
Please send your stories or songs to James Paul
