The Long, the Short and the Tall icon

Op Banner 1973

Our company location was in the knicker factory on the border between the Greggan and the Bogside, a most lethal place.

There were three WRAC girls in the location whose task was to collate search reports, intelligence, and related stuff.

To pass the time these girls started a competition, it was to nominate the 'ugliest soldier in the unit award' anyone could nominate a 'friend', cost was 50p to go to charity; multiple entries welcome.

The entries went on for about a fortnight. We all watched the board on the wall outside the WRAC office, just in case our own names appeared. There were growing numbers of uglies pictures being placed up daily. The company 2ic was not amused when his picture appeared there as a contender, though all would agree that he was well qualified as an entry for the award. The Company Commander thought it 'bad form' and bad for the morale of those unfortunates nominated, but he let it go.

Then one day the winner was announced: It was the Company Colour sergeant. He won it outright and was a well deserving winner and took it in good heart.

The award was written as follows: After much consideration and diligent thought and examination, we have chosen a winner. This choice was most difficult in that even in such a small unit there were so many well deserving cases. We nominate Colour Sergeant X of the Royal Welch Fusiliers, it is felt that though everyone has the right to be ugly, we feel that the winner has most certainly abused the privilege.
