and I remembered all of it because I was there.
I will compile the story of my service in the Canal Zone before and during the riots in the near future,
if you are interested. Added June 2002: When the Ishmalia riots started all the inmates at the MCTC wereformed into platoons with MPSC NCO's as platoon commanders. We were sent out on detachments to guard various supply points ie; water filteration station on the Sweetwater Canal at Farz, the bulk oil Depot at Nefiesha, and to take control of the Cairo/Suez Rail Line also at Nefiesha. We also built and staffed a Detention Camp for terrorists captured by our troops. This camp was situated next to the Moascar Military Cemetry. We also took over and staffed the Garrison Guard Room in Moascar where we detained known leaders of terrorist groups.Our detachments outside the Garrison often came under fire but fortunately we suffered no casualties, although we caused a few among the attacking groups.This is only a brief detail of the part played by the MPSC during the uprising and the riots of Ishmalia. til early 1956 when transferred to RAF Nicosia until May 1957. Got
turned down for GS Medal, didn't have the necesssary number of active
service days required by the MOD, but did receive one for Cyprus. At Abyad I ran for station athletics team and ran the Shubra mountain race in 1955. The guard duties weren't good but the social times were great. I recall a camp show with Harry Secombe being one of the singers, he was at the start of his career then I guess. | Comments | A typical ‘tour of duty’ was 3 years and the troops in Tel-el-Kebir lived under canvas for the whole period. I was lucky for, as a senior rank (AQMS – Production Control Veh's and then WO i/c QC, (also CSM "B" Coy as 'part time') I had the ‘luxury’ of living in a hut. I actually put my bed and 'mozzy' net out on the verandah because it was a lot more comfortable outside. It only rained once in the three years (1952 - 1955). The ‘Bog’ was an ‘Eight Seater Thunder Box’ and, for convenience, there were ‘Desert Roses’ strategically placed around camp. S/Sgt Mick Sweeney and his charming wife who had built a (canvas on wood) house in the miadam persuaded me to do the same and I owe them both a great deal for making my life so much better toward the end when I also built a ‘Hut’ and was able to bring my Wife Kathy out for the last year. ( If you're out there Mick - sorry that we lost our friendship, can't even think why after all these years. Would be glad to share memories and pic's with any old comrades who are interested. Have photos of ‘Soapy’ Hudson and myself as ‘Escort to The Keys’ at the ceremonial handover of the Base to the Suez Contractors in 1955. Cheers to all the good ol' folk who were there.
