| Unit | Royal Navy. HMSM 'Trenchant' |
| Stationed at | Bitter Lakes on board 'Fort Duquesne.' |
| Service Number | CSKX867763 |
| Now living in | Nottingham |
| Comments | My boat was being refitted in Malta when I embarked with other mixed forces to Suez. I understood this was because I was a SW Diver and there was a perceived threat of sinking a ship in the canal with limpet mines. The object was to bottom search ships going through the canal. In fact I finished up with a small team on the 'Fort Duquesne' with English Officers and a Maltese Crew in the Bitter Lakes, Bottom searching her on a twice daily basis. We were headed by a trained 'Frogman' whose purpose was to disable anything found. |

| Comments | We were under canvas all the
time at both camps. At Ismailia I did all the usual tourist activities, at El-Firdan workshops I worked in the machine shop, mostly on the sliding bed planer. At Kasfereet I worked across the road in the 5355 plant compound on the Ashphalt (hotmix) fleet. My leisure time I spent at the 107 MU Sailing club mainly crewing for Jim Wells. | Unit | Royal Artillery |
| Stationed at | Fayid Transit camp |
| Service Number | 22467658 |
| Now living in | Wiltshire |
| Comments | I was at the transit camp for two months because of a mix up at my own unit in Aden, I
was sent there instead of straight through to Woolwich. My time
there was spent on guard or escort backwards and forwards taking other lucky Squadies to the airfield or the not so lucky ones from the airfield. The one bright spot was when I nearly shot the Orderly Officer early one morning when he crept up on me to see if I was alert. I was on guard on the gate when I heard a scraping noise behind me, I got out two "stannas" before I turned round, I had the safety catch off and the rifle pointed at his chest from about 4 yards, when I told the Guard Commander he said, "You should have shot the silly b*****d, it would have served him right." What a horrible camp that was. |

| Comments | Keep up the fight lads, Its about time the British govt reconised the Canal Zone vets. I served 3 years there from 1951 to 1954. The Canal Zoners out here are signing petitions and sendind them back to the UK. So keep the fight up we are all behind you out here. There's 100s of ex canal zoners out here, we are disgusted the way the British goverment have treated us regarding a GSM, they have the cheek to say that we wernt on active service, if that is true then why have we left so many dead behind. Keep up the good work, keep fighting for our medal, we are signing petions out here and sending them to the UK. An ex sapper. |

| Comments | Sailed from Liverpool Jan 1953 on the MV Devonshire, "Good God, hammocks". Arrived Port Said in Feb. Train from
Port Said to Suez, what a journey, 'land of the Pharoahs'. Arrived Hodgsons Camp by truck, 'land of the wigwams', nothing but tents, sand, barbed wire, and mountains. Remember 'longbow the second ''schemes', 'route marches', 'Stella beer,' 'Abu Sultan', WRAC camp Ismailia, hospital Fayid, 'kilo 99', ''filtration plant', the Bitter Lakes, New Brighton, Sinai desert, oh and of course, the Suez Canal. Saw Nasser. Naguib. (Suez) Major Salah Salem (kilo 99) 'the Dancing Major'. In 1954 was somehow promoted. In June 54 sailed back to Southhampton on HMT Empire Fowey, "wow proper beds". Back to a 'customs welcome', felt like a criminal, no I didn't have any extra fags! Just memories. Egypt is a country I'll never forget, in particular what happened to Egyptians who were in the employ of British forces, it is them who really suffered. Yes we deserved a medal and many thanks to all who accomplished this final event. General Sir Brian Robertson started the ball rolling for a Suez medal 51/52 but somehow his request was mislaid. Col Cubbins was the Cheshires CO., 'nicknamed 'The Red Ant', he wanted a stripe for every soldier in the Cheshires, 'request denied' Dare I mention the Dale Barracks at Chester, and Whittington Barracks at Lichfield? Least but not last, Colchester Barracks and our final base before Berlin and Spandau. |
