Support to the population of Rangoon in Burma and the same in Trieste, then an internationalcity in dispute between Italy and Yugoslavia. Some showingthe flag in Cyprus which was getting nasty. |

| Comments | Egypt- the last place God made, then forgot about it. I was stationedthere from April1950 - March 1953. The conditions at TEK were terrible. We were under canvas, and the food was deplorable. Hygeine conditions overall were very bad. All of our money was used to buy food from the NAAFI! At TEK, there was 17 square mile of perimeter, minefields, search lights and machine gun towers, same as a prison of war camp. The wogs were raiding every night. There were pitched battles with our garrison security. The Mauritian tower guards would turn their searchlights off to allow the wogs into the camp in exchange for a back hander - but occasionally, you'd hear an explosion as one of them copped for it. The Egyptian students used to come up from Cairo and stir up the locals (called the Falaheen,I think, and they were labourers), then disappear back to Cairo! Many, many more memories, but not enough space! |

| Comments | I was due to be postedto Palestine in April 1948 but our troopship was diverted to the Canal Zone as British troops began to pull out of Palestine. We were warned that the locals could be hostile and our train was pelted with stones as we travelled from Port Said to Ismailia. I spent the firstpart of my time in Egypt at a tented camp at Ferry Point near Ismailia before being moved to RAF Abyad (a Maintenance Unit of RAF Fayid) as part of the 4th Independent Air Formation SignalsSquadron in 1949. When we first arrived at Abyad some of the RAF personnel thought we were an AA unit sent defend the airfield against Israeli air attack. When we first arrived in the Canal Zone, German POWs were still used on the camp. They took great pride in their appearance and were given pick helves to act as guards. Many locals were also employed, and I found them be friendly. However, one nasty incident soured relations. An Egyptian money-lender demanding his money from a Scotsman was shot between the eyes by the debtor, with a revolverbelonging to the despatch rider who shared his tent. Agitated Arabs then demonstrated outside the camp and the guard was doubled. A friend and I had a lucky escape on leave in Port Said after being chased by Arabs with daggers. Fortunately, they couldn't run as fast as us in their long robes. We climbed over the dockyard gates and taunted them from the other side. Later that same night a matelot was stabbed to death. Overall though, I made the best of my time in Egypt and was reluctant to go home. I left in August 1949 and was demobbed as L/Cpl on return to England after my National Service. |

Benham (both Beachley ex-boys), were sent to Fayid after service in
Korea with the 74th Medium Artillery Regiment (the Battleaxe Coy), although we only had a few months left on our 3 year tour abroad. As we were 'Korean Veterans'!!, we were given nice cushy jobs. I worked in an office in charge of technical manuals - with an Egyptian (married) secretary. The pictures of the Lido and the cinema brought back happy memories. I saw the first ever 3-D movies at the Astra!! On return to UK eventually transferredto Pay Corps, also changing my surname to at the same time on the remarriageof my mother. |

| Comments | My late father, Harry Hurley (from East London)served as a National Service Private in the Royal Army OrdnanceCorps
at Tel el Kebir (in I think, 1953-4). He was trained
as a Crane Operator but also got to drive lots
of differenttanks and vehicles, and also did some boxing in the Army. He rememberedthe lone nights patrolling the wire around the depot, always
at risk from terrorist fire. Sadly my father died in 1998 from a heart attack, but I would like to see the medal
awarded to all who served. I have written to the Secretary of State for Defence to express this view. I now work for
the Army (as a civilian)and would be interestedto hear from anyonewho may have servedwith my Father in the Army or in Egypt, I have some photos of him and his service friends while serving there. I am contactable at
