A crap service job - 80,000 HM Forces living in an area of about 120 x 25 miles, living in 1930's tents on the desert, surrounded by barbed wire, shot at by locals given the nod by their own 'police', and bombed by grenades if you didn't drive like hell through the local villages. The Government of the day treated us like lepers and left us exposed to a hostile nation unable to answer back fully. Even soldiers posted from Korea to the Canal Zone to finish their 3 years overseas service complained bitterly that the CZ service was just as dangerous.

Comments	Anyone from 1951 to 1954 at Shallufa, especially Station Armoury and Bomb Dump, plus MT detached to Fayid to load Jeeps and trailers to Hastings. 12/12/52 returned home after winning a raffle to be met by the news that my aircraft crashed, all crew died. Returned in February 1953 until sailing home on the 'Devonshire' with 2 Battalion Parachute Regiment and Guards. I was stationed at Shallufa from 12/12/1951 until 15/6/1954 and still remember the parachute bugs eating myself and all other members. The total number of deaths in this period in the Canal Zone exceeded 1000, not the 600 that is often bandied about. In this small town I have uncovered 7 Canal Veterans, Army and Air Force. I am in the phone book.

Comments	I arrived in Egypt in October 53. My first posting was to Kabrit where I was employed in the Station Workshops. Not too bad a camp as we had access to the Bitter Lake to swim. After 8 months I was attached to the Royal Engineers on their floating workshop Sea Mechanist, a cushy posting at Fanara Wharf on the Bitter Lake. After that it was RAF El Firdan for a few months and then RAF Abyad, where the guard duties came thick and fast as there were so few of us left to do them. After that, home on the Lancashire in December 55. A period from Oct 53 to Dec 55 wasted in conditions that would never be tolerated by the youth of today. We deserve a medal just for putting up with the heat, flies and smells alone, apart from the dangers we faced on a daily basis. Unfortunately due to the passage of time I don’t remember any names from that time, but if anybody remembers me I would love to hear from them.
