Women who served in the Canal Zone
It is a fact that a great many women served in the Canal Zone 1951-1954. These included Units of :
QARANC
(Queen Alexandras Royal Army Nursing Corps)
WRAF,
Women's Royal Air Force
WRAC,
Women's Royal Army Corps
Princes
Marina's RAFNS
Some were billeted in Fayid, in Kensington Village. I spent two weeks in December of 1952, and again in August of 1953, with Dysentery in BMH Fayid, and was looked after by nurses and also orderlies from the RAMC. Women were also in attendance at most RAF Bases, and at the British Army HQ. The service of these women should be recognized as well, by a medal. Incidentally Sgt. Terry Lawton told me of an incident that happened in the Zone where a member of the WRAF was kidnapped by Egyptian Terrorists, raped and killed, this incident alone almost resulted in very serious incident by incensed RAF, and Army personnel.
Ladies please forgive our mistakes and omissions.
We will also print (with your permission, of course) any experiences and stories from those trying times,
Thank you and God bless
