The Daily Sketch

These 2 cuttings about Aden I took from a copy from the now defunct Fleet Street paper The Daily Sketch early in 1968 while I was in Dubai . The papers were flown out to us from the UK. I think you will find the pictures and text self explanatory. My thoughts on reading this were (as they are today) for those we left behind. Was this what they died for. I have reduced the files as you requested. Qualities not great but then the cuttings are almost 38 years old. I can send you bigger files if needed.
As a member of 10 Airfield Sqn RE I was involved in dumping some of that equipment on Slave Island in Sept/Oct 1967. As you can imagine we were not very happy to be leaving a lot of serviceable transport and plant behind for the enemy to make use of. We sabotaged much of it by putting sand into the engines and fuel tanks. Some was simply driven into the harbour. I believe a lot of equipment was left behind because we did not have enough ships or aircraft to remove it in the time available. We did leave in rather a hurry! I was also involved in loading the Empire Fulmar (LST 3524) and HMS Fearless.
