In September and October of 1953, the Vampires of 213 squadron tested the feasibility of getting from the Canal Zone to South Africa using hand refuelling and the dirt strips. Our destination was the South African Air Force station at Swartkop in the Transvaal. We made it and spent a few days down there before flying all the way back to North Africa. The exercise was called  "Quick Return".
