Air Traffic Control at Salalah

Contributed by Martin Gittins

I was with the RAF (Air Traffic Control) at Salalah from July 1975 to March 76. Not quite in the thick of the war, but still interesting times. I was a Senior Aircraftsman at the time and an Assistant Air Traffic Controller.

I did cadge lots of rides up country and took many photos. Shed on Stilts is the Air Traffic Control Tower.
The Hunter is from the base up country at Thumrait that used to stop by and beat us up now and then.

Arrived:- Delivering a carpenter (and his one case) to a patch of virgin
desert so that he could start building a small comuniyt to support the
wandering tribes men as part of the hearts and minds campaign.

Downtown Salah:- The edge of Salalah town just after take off.

Strikee Escort:-  is taken from a Skyvan low (and I mean low) flying down
the Thunrait road. We were joined by three Strikemasters, left, right and rear.

Strikee Flypast:-  Good view of the rocket and bomb weaponry.Shed on stilts (again)
