This was a convoy exercise landed from the 1st Amphibious Assault Squadron, which included HMS Reggio and HMS Striker. It landed not far up the coast from Alexandria, and followed the North African coast road all the way to Tripoli. I managed to work a few days off so that I could accompany the convoy. As you can see, I was only allowed to go on this trip by wearing the uniform of a Royal Marine commando. I think the phrase "false colours" fits this situation. As a change from shipboard life. it was fun and very interesting, including sleeping on top of the tilts of the lorries to stay out of the way of the scorpions. And yes, we did see scorpions.

Mussolini during the Italian occupation. It was destroyed by Col Gaddafi, but I
understand that some remains can still be seen.

This will give you a much better idea of the size of the
construction. And it really was all Marble.
