Allied Military Government first began on Italian soil on 10th July 1943 when the Allies captured Sicily. Three months later, on 3rd September 1943 the Allies landed on the Italian Mainland and AMGOT came to continental Europe. On 31st December 1945 AMGOT ended, except in Udine and Venezia provinces in Italy. The Allied Commission ended on 31st January 1947.
AMGOT in Italy was only active in combat zones after the Italian government became a co-belligerent, AMGOT moved up the Italian foot as the fighting progressed leaving the southern provinces to be administered by the Italian Government in the name of King Emmanuel III.
AMGOT unwittingly helped revive the Italian Mafia in Sicily and later, in Italy.
