My Grandfather Sid Martindale was born in Newcastle England in 1914. He worked in the coal mines until 1939, when his King and Country called on him to fight for the freedom we all have today. Sid did not win any medals for bravery or lead a valiant charge against enemy positions, but to me he is my greatest Hero. He was just a ordinary soldier who did his bit, and when asked to serve his country was prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice for us without a second thought

He survived the heat of El Alamein, the beaches of Sicily and the mud of Italy while some of his close friends did not make it back. I hope you enjoy reading Sid's War Time Memories, I have tried to give you an insight to the life of a simple soldier trying to survive the hell of war. This site is my small tribute to all British Veterans around the world. It is NOT a Historical site, only the story of what my Grandfather saw and experienced during World War Two

Sadly Sid passed away in April of 2005 at the grand old age of 91. He is greatly missed by his 3 great grand children who loved Grandpa Sid. To me, Sid was the kindest, most gentlest man I have ever know and I miss him dearly. Please be kind enough to take a moment to sign Sids Guest Book. I make sure that Sid gets to read all your comments that are left in the guest book. Also please view my W.W.II Links page for other veterans sites on the web. Thanks for taking the time to read an old soldiers story
