They were the first Eoka terrorists to be hanged.

Demetriou, born in Agios Mamas in Limassol, was proudest of his theft of large quantities of weapons and ammunition immediately it had been unloaded in Famagusta port. Demetriou and KARAOLIS have achieved martyr status in Greek Cyprus.

According to Eoka mythology, Demetriou's last words were: 'I am sorry I will not be able to see our Cyprus free. However, I am not frightened by death because life is worth nothing in slavery.' These executions sparked anti-British riots in Athens in which four died and 200 individuals were injured.)

DEMETRIOU, Antonis
DEMETRIOU, Antonios, Priest. (Officially, he was in charge of maintaining the St George Monastery's estate. In this role he was in position to provide jobs for several Eoka 'executioners', including 'Erasmus' who murdered the first British civilian in the conflict.)

DEMETRIOU, Aristarhos. (A pharmacist by profession, GRIVAS agreed his appointment to the Larnaca branch of PEKA - the Political Committee of the Cyprus Struggle. The Committee, according to an Eoka member close to 'The Leader', had a 'delicate role and must comprise people with political clear-sightedness and a certain influence on society in general'.)

DEMETRIOU, Christos.

With him were five other gang members, including Mikis Kyriacou FIRILLAS and Neophytes SOPHOCLOUS. Demetriou surrendered to Cpl MOYSE and Sgt DASH of 1 Suffolks.).

DEMETRIOU, Pantelis. (A member of the Larnaca group, he was arrested by the British and held in Nicosia's Central Prison, where, during the Christmas 56 period, he and others discovered the identity of an informer known as 'Odysseus', who had also been placed in the prison, attempted his execution there. 'Odysseus' survived and was sent to the UK and given a new identity.)

DEMETRIOU, Renos (Born 1934 in Emba, he was one of four members of an Eoka murder squad in Nicosia under the command of 18 year-old Isychios SOFOCLEUS. The Nicosia gang succeeded in several attacks on British service personnel in late 1955 and early 1956. Demetriou was wounded during one of these attacks, caught and interned. GRIVAS claimed this group murdered more soldiers and airmen than can be verified.)

DEMETRIOU, Stavros (Sentenced to death in Nicosia on 12.02.57 of being in possession of illegal firearms, the sentence was commuted by Governor HARDING because the guilty youth was just 18-years-old.)

DEMITRIOU, Nicos (Born in 1932, he was a travel agent during the Eoka conflict. He supplied the terrorists with transport. The Special Branch caught and interned him.)

DEMETRAKIS, Christodoulo
DEMETRAKIS, Christodoulo (On 17 February 1957 B Troop of 40 Commando, RM, mounted an ambush in the area of Palendria and Potanitssia. Two groups, consisting of 8 Section led by Lt MARSHAL, and 9 Section led by Lt HAYNES, completed a successful operation which resulted in the capture of LENAS, an explosives expert, and Christodoulo Denetraki, a known active terrorist. Both men had £5,000 reward tags on their heads. Denetraki, armed with an Italian rifle and grenades, was shot dead while attempting to escape. Lt Haynes and his section made a second interception of three armed men shortly before first light on 18 February. The terrorist group was challenged in accordance with garrison standing orders, but one of their number immediately opened fire with a sub-machine gun, killing Lt Haynes. The terrorist responsible was also killed in the shoot-out that followed.)

DIMITRIIU, Andreas Dimitriu (He told the Greek daily Alithia how his comrades massacred 89 innocent Turkish peasants in the village of Tohni/Taskent. He claimed these killings were carried out with the support of the Greek secret service.)

Drakos, Marcos Drakos, Marcos

DRAKOS, Markos. Code-name: Lykourgos. (One of Eoka's key players in the mountain gangs, he was shot dead on 17.01.57 by Cpl B KING and L/Cpl H FOWLER of 1 Suffolk Regt during Operation Black Mac in the Troodos Mountains, causing the break-up of the gang he led from Omodhos, a village notorious for its terrorist activity. With King were Ptes BRASSET, COOPER, SELLS, WILLSON, WOODS and L/Cpl FOWLER.

Drakos Sten gun
1 Suffolks put Drakos's Sten gun on display at the regiment's headquarters, with other examples of other captured Eoka weapons.

While KING and FOWLER have been credited with his death, Doros ALASTOS, the Greek Cypriot historian, states Drakos committed suicide. His body contained 13 bullets.

Markos Drakos
During his career, Drakos (extreme left, standing) led the gang that killed a US diplomat in Nicosia. Note the Bren guns in possession of these terrorists. The weapons came from a raid on a store in Famagusta docks, soon after the guns arrived from British bases in Egypt, which were closing.)

In May 1955 he was alleged to have a placed a bomb under the seat of Sir Robert ARMITAGE, the Cyprus Governor, in Nicosia's Pallas cinema when he went to watch Forbidden Cargo. The bomb failed to explode until the official party had left. (In fact, Haralambos XENOFONTOS placed the device -explosive packed in a Coca Cola bottle.) Soon afterwards, Drakos was caught and confined in Kyrenia Castle. On 16.07.55, with other Eoka prisoners, including Archimandrite STAMATOPOULOS, he escaped, an acute embarrassment for the authorities. Amongst the escapees was Gregoris AFXENTIOU. The Drakos gang was the first to launch an organized attack on British Forces. It took place in the Mersinaki area in mid-December 1955.

Drakos was born in Kalopanayiotis in 1930. Before his Eoka activities, the Hellenic Mining Company employed him. He always carried a copy of the Greek New Testament, which had been printed in the UK.)

On 16 September 1955, the United Nations refused to place the Cyprus issue on its agenda, which Makarios and the Athens' government wanted. The same evening, Markos Drakos and 15 fellow Eoka gang members escaped from windows in Kyrenia Castle, using knotted sheets to lower themselves on to the beach of the country club.

A young British Army officer in the castle reported something unusual was happening on the beach below and asked for advice on what he should do.

Legend claims his superiors told him: 'People on the Country Club beach? Well, you'd better them if they're members, old boy!'

DRIMIOTIS, Reno. (He was a 2Lt in the Greek Army and an Eoka unit leader in the Paphos District.)

DROUSHIOTIS, Yiannakis. Code-name: Averof. (One of the conflict's opening night bombers, he was GRIVAS's chief aide in Nicosia and a major financial donor to 'the cause'. Later he was placed in command of a 5-man gang in the Lysos area. When arrested, he pretended to co-operate with his interrogators. He told them, in detail, how he had seen GRIVAS leave Cyprus - by a submarine of the Greek Navy!

In 1963, he wrote his memoirs of the first day of the Eoka conflict: 'We drove up in an old Morris that broke down when we were a few hundred yards away. Someone got out to look under the bonnet and a grenade fell out of his satchel and bounced in the road. Quite a few bombs didn't go off, and the ones that did caused more smoke than fire. We drove away without seeing a soul. Afterwards, one of our group, Charalambos XENOFONTOS, picked up the EOKA leaflets from Drakos' house and distributed them in the street from his bicycle.'

DROUSHOT, Aristidou (The Security Forces believed he was No 3 in the command structure of Eoka, although he was just 24-years-old. On 15.03.57, he was captured without a struggle. He had been expected to fight to the death.)

Drousiotis, George
DROUSIOTIS, George (A school teacher by profession, he was appointed to the Larnaca branch of PEKA - the Political Committee for the Cyprus Struggle. He was killed by the TMT, the Turkish Cypriots' Fighters organization.)
