XAPOLITOS - First name not known (On the 'wanted man' list there were two men named Xapolitos and THOMA, known members of an EOKA mountain group. They each had a reward of £5,000 on their heads. Xapolitos's wife had been responsible for supplying their food. She lived in Galini and was the mother of four small children. Shortly after midnight on the night 29-30 October 1956, in the course of Operation Foxhunter, a team from HQ 16th Independent Parachute Brigade Group, led by CSM DEPSTER of the Provost Group, set out for Galini. It included two WRAC Provost NCOs. After a long drive along the mountain roads, their two Land Rovers stopped a short way from Xapolitos' house, which was cordoned-. The party went in and Xapolitos' wife was found in bed with her children asleep. CSM DEMPSTER and Private THOMAS searched the bedroom, where they found a hide under the floorboards. Xapolitos and THOMA burst out and attempted to escape, encouraged by his wife, who was restrained by Sergeant BIRBECK and Lance-Corporal WHITE, both WRACs.)

* XENOFONTOS, Xenofontos (Born 1941 in Agridaki, Kyrenia District, he died 12 November 1958 while held by the Police. He had been caught by British troops in the mountains aiding the terrorists. EOKA claims his death was caused by torture while he was under interrogation.)

XENOPHANTOS, Efstathios

XENOFONTOS Haralambos
XENOFONTOS, Haralambos. (Born 1927 in Messoyi, this Troodos mountain gang member accompanied GRIVAS when the Eoka leader had to escape his Spilia hideout in December 1955. At the start of the conflict, he distributed Eoka pamphlets, throwing them from his bicycle as he raced through Nicosia's narrow streets. Next, this former municipal worker, who was part of the Markos DRAKOS group, tried to assassinate Governor Robert ARMITAGE on Empire Day in May 1955. Xenofontos failed, because his bomb - explosive material packed in a Coca Cola bottle - did not explode until the official party had left the Pallas cinema, which was screening Forbidden Cargo.)

XENOFONTAS Prodromos
XENOPHONTOS, Nicos. (While part of Operation Lucky Alphonse, KOYLI's HQ and Support Company were searching ruined buildings in the high Troodos Mountains, when Lt J A CHARLESWORTH and Private RICHARDSON of 2 Platoon discovered Xenophontos in hiding. He was in possession of medical supplies, food, weapons and what appeared to be a bomb-making 'factory', complete with lathes and a variety of modern tools. The terrorist, with a 5,000 pound price on his head, was tried in Nicosia, found guilty and faced hanging. Later, the Kathikas-born, 23-year-old's death sentence was commuted by Governor HARDING as a gesture of goodwill on 26.10.56.)

XENOPHONTOS, Prodromos
