Gurkha Cemetery
(Old & New)
Sungei Patani
Kedah, Malaysia

Sungei Patani is a small town north of the port of Butterworth and the well known island of Penang.
This town was very much associated with Gurkhas as it was their training depot for many years.
There are two cemeteries situated outside the rear perimeter fence of the camp.
This is 1 mile north of the town which was previously occupied by the Gurkha Brigade.
Access to both cemeteries is through a gate in the camp fence leading on to a laterite track.
The new cemetery is about 100yds. Along the track to the right and lies among the trees.
It is small and compact enclosed with a chain link fence.
First used in Jan 1960 it contains the remains of 7 Gurkha Servicemen and 73 wives and children.

The old cemetery was closed down in October 1959 and the new entrance to this was made in 1997
making access much easier.
There are 41 Gurkha servicemen and 77 wives and children buried here
