Kluang Gurkha Cemetery
Johore, Malaysia

Kluang was very much a Garrison Town for the British Army from the end of World War11 until taken
over by the Malaysian Army in August 1970
It is located some 65 miles North From Johore Bahru and Singapore.
The Garrison lies some two miles North of the Town and covers a large area.
The cemetery is situated on a hillside west of the Garrison and can be reached by a laterite track,
which crosses the stream by way of a wooden bridge before climbing steeply up the hillside to the entrance?
There is an impressive gateway of wrought iron with arch and square brick gateposts and on each
a plaque with the crossed Kukris.
The cemetery is terraced out of the hillside, the lower half is planted with scrubs but there are only a few graves here.
The larger number of graves being in the upper part is reached by a long flight of concrete steps.
The graves in the centre plot are arranged in arcs with two low stone walls bearing plaques with the
crossed kukris.
The Gurkhas have long been associated with Kluang and the cemetery is a fitting tribute to the
36 Gurkha servicemen and the 167 Wives and Children buried there.
