I was with 24 Field Squadron RE stationed in Osnabruck Germany. The CO Major Jarvis .RSM Conway Troop officer 2nd Lt Watson & Sgt Ellis.

On Sept. 56 we were on maneuvers and called back to barracks to get ready to move out at a moments notice We left Germany for the UK and sailed on Dilwara from Southampton with the Highland Light Infantry & the Pioneers.


 

 We landed in Port Said after the cease fire ,and marched with the HLI in front 
of us to the sound of the pipes & drums , right to Port Said station. We slept on the platform.

After that the 24Field sqd, RE took over a school close to the station. See images below. 
The desks were removed from the school in order to make quarters for us.

24 Field Squadron built a Pontoon Bridge across the canal off the main canal behind Port Said. The Pontoon Bridge was built in case the main bridge, which can been seen in back ground in first picture, was sabotaged. The Pontoon bridge was never used.

After the withdrawal the 24FS RE sallied back to UK on HMS Theseus, and landed at Portsmouth.

After leave back to Germany. On returning to Osnabruck one of the soldiers painted this mural on a wall to show the activities of 24 Field Squadron at Suez.
