Cover Notes

With his role in intelligence and counter-intelligence, the author was in a near unique position of being able to write a balanced account of the Falklands Campaign. His direct access to Argentine prisoners, documents and equipment enabled him to write a balanced account of the ground war from the time that Argentina planned the invasion of the FI Dependencies, to British preparations and the landings at San Carlos to the Argentine surrender and repatriation of prisoners. The author pulls no punches, in particular showing that the battle of Goose Green was far from an intelligence blunder, indeed of all the battles fought, 2 Para had the most intelligence.

Andy Hadfield   rated this book It's already in the bin
This book was rubbish and poorly writen I could have done better with a crayon

Martin Spirit rated this bookExcellent
I can only imagine that Mr. Hadfiled who wrote the above comments has not taken the opportunity to read 9 Battles to Stanley. If he had he would realize that Nicholas van der Bijl has written the best and most well researched book on the Falklands War. This book is a main stay for all our research on the campaign for the Britain's Small Wars web site. Plus I've met Nick !

Having read some of  the other comments Mr. Hadfiled placed about other books on this web site, I can tell he has a large collection of crayons and uses them on a regular basis.

Originally published in September 1999, this work provides a detailed account on both British patrols and Argentine 601st and 602nd Commando Company operations in No-Man's-Land. Bijl is more than just an historian - he served as 3rd Commando Brigade's Intelligence Officer in the Falklands War.

I've read more than a dozen books dealing with the Falkands conflict. This is among the mosst researched and highly organized of them all! A must read!

Tony McNally rated this book as Excellent
This book was recomended to me by Martin Spirit, as a Falklands Veteran myself I am eager to read about the war, even though you are part of something it is only really your job that you concern yourself with and I was amazed to read the full account of the actions by British forces to retake the Falkland Islands and South Georgia, and it made me realise that is wasn't as straight foreward as some people think and we could quite easilly have `lost` the war. But we never and thank's to Nicholas Van der Bijl future generations will know the effort it took by our profesional armed forces to retake the islands. One of the most remarkable phot's in the book is that of two officers digging a trench, must have been stage managed.

Edward Denmark rated this book as Excellent
I think Nine Battles to Stanley is one of the most detailed and informative books to have come out of the Falklands war yet. It blows away many myths that have grown about the Falklands war, and sets the record straight that we British had a bloody hard fight on our hands, and the Argentines far from being scared conscripts fought with bravery.

Andrew Pasman rated this book as Excellent
I really recommend it. It's complete and very much interesting. The Falklands war is something that not many people know a lot about. The argentines fought with great bravey, although it would seem almost impossible that they defeat the huge military power of Britain, figting for those islands which still belong to Argentina.

nick christie rated this book as Excellent
This book is quite outstanding when compared with his first book about his life during the Falklands War  However, as a useful, objective, and detailed account of this landmark conflict in British military history, there are few rivals.
