Cover Notes

Since the days of Doughty, Arabia and the Arabs have cast a peculiar spell over British explorers and writers, James Lunt has come under this influence without allowing it to cloud his critical faculties or dull his sense of humour.  Three years service with the Arab Legion in Jordan had given him his first insight into Arab character and customs (and fluency in Arabic) when his appointment in 1961 to command the army of the Federation of South Arabia gave him the opportunity to travel extensively in the little-known tribal territory lying between Aden and the borders of the Yemen.  THE BARREN ROCKS OF ADEN is a vivid and often amusing account of his travels in this region, the people he met there and their way of life.

Not all the mountainous hinterland of Aden is barren or desert: there are some large areas under cultivation and many of the valleys are green and fertile; but pre-dominantly it is a wild and harsh country, and the life of its inhabitants is wild and hard too. It is a land of tribal rivalries and of blood feuds, in which every grown man carries a rifle.

In his travels, whether official or private, James Lunt got to know Arabs of all social levels, from the tribal rulers to the poorest Bedouin or fisherman. His accounts of his conversations with them are among the most interesting and revealing parts of this book.  For though hr does not discuss the political problems of the area, or the British role there, he does give a clear picture of the realities of life that form the background to such vexed questions. Above all he tells a lively story and communicates something of the spell of Arabia to his readers.
