I want to say a big thank you to taff for the dedication to my brother
Steve, I carry in my purse the the same photo of them on route to the Falklands. I
have not finished the book as I dont want to read about the 28th May I love reading
about him while he is still alive. One day I will bring myself to finish it, 30
years next year since he died but still seems like yesterday . Well done Taff it
would be great to hear from you.

Just read this book, a friend told me about it.. Being from a town not
far from Mr Curtis, Nantyglo. I found it to be a Excellent read, which makes you
feel like your standing shoulder to shoulder with the author in all his battles
whether it was personal or professional.

I read the book about 35 yrs ago.
Best book ever. Since I first picked it up I've found it hard to put down. The
adventures Mike and his mates went on were hard out, they must been brave lads. I
found this book to be better than watching a james bond film on tv, its just so
interesting. Im joining the nz army soon and I have found this book has given me an
insight into what army life is all about. If you ever read this Mike, I praise your
writing ability and you and your mates efforts to protect our peaceful way of life.
Keep up the good work

Great book! Im in the Aussie forces and this book was passed onto me by
an ex-brit who was at the Falklands as an 18 year old. I cant believe what they went
through to get those Islands back. He makes you feel like you are there with him and
you get a sense of pride everytime you read it. It makes me think of joining our own
SAS. The whole book is really well written; better than McNab anyday. Mike if your
reading this- well done and hope all is well.

What can I say? As a former Para (hey Mike, how are you doin?)who was
there, CQB is pretty much on the money. In addition, the truly heroic death as
written by Mike, of our old pal Steve Illingsworth, was done with reverence and
respect. So to all the boys of Corporate, Salute, peace and happyness. The bonds
made in that God forsaken war will last a lifetime.

I'm just over half way through this book, but it really is riveting,
enlightening, and also amusing in parts. A hard b**tard and no mistake, but there
are also some touching moments (The Welsh Argies). And as stated above, the utmost
respect must be shown to those who have served in the SAS and the Parachute
Regiment. Superb read. So why am I typing this??!

I served in the British Army and I spent 2 years in N. Ireland from 1980
to 1982. I was born in S. Wales and I personally new some of the the paras Mike
refers to in his book including taff Hall who was shot in the Falklands. I
discovered CQB while browsing in a bookstore and I couldn't put it down. I bought
it, rushed home and read it in one day, I've never read a book in one day before or
since. Riveting accounts of battle and hardships experienced during training. Mike,
I can totally understand how you felt about Aberfan (it's a Welsh thing). Anyway, a
truly remarkable book which I will keep on my shelf forever and I highly recommend
it to anyone soldier or civilian alike. Well done Mike, you make Wales and the
British Special Forces proud!

book was a major influence on my own descision to apply for sf in my own nation.
When i was faltering during selection, i thought of curtis and his mates on that
cold hill in the falklands and then my own ordeals didn't seem so bad. Well Done,
Mike.

Human, realistic and captivating... Still we can see through the reading that some details and events have been modified to fit into a "public" novel....Good job Taff ;)

I love this book i have read it over 20 times over the years. It could be 2 years and i would pick it up and get right back in to it. The most powerful and well wrote book i have ever had the luck to read. I want to thank all the people who have ever put there lives on the line as did Mike Curtis did. People like Mike make make the British Army what it is today.

Served with Mike in 2 para, he was my first section commander and respected by all, not a great reader myself but I couldn`t put this one down, Mike gives an honest account of Military life at home and in the field. Full credit to Mike just the inspiration I needed.

With regards to the book being in the honour of stephen illingsworth, i'd like to say that i am his cousin and reading about someone you are related to who acted in extreme bravery under intense fire is amazing. Although we would have much prefered if he didnt!
Would be nice if mike got in touch if that was possible, im currently going in to the paras to carry on the family name, although different surname now.

A very well written book that is not full of bullshit like a few others SAS books. One of my personal favourites but he does seem like he could have been a professional rugby union player which may have been the better alternative, considering he has some fatal disease now.

Close Quarter Battle gives an excellent insight into the life of Mike Curtis and his incredible military experiences. He makes you feel as if you know him, from his description of his Welsh mining town childhood to his intense recollections of the Faulklands and Gulf wars. I have a new found respect for those who make the sacrifice of a military career. I couldn't put this book down and eagerly wait another from this author.

This
book is one of the best military books I have ever read. CQB is about a
man that joins the paras in 79 a serves in the Falklands war. He later
joins the SAS in 86 and takes part in the gulf and bosnien war. If you
want to join the SAS by joining the paras first you have to read this book.
It is also very good when he describes SAS selection and the Paras P Company.

As
an infantry officer, reading this book brought about a sense of pride that
may never be taken away from me. Mike Curtis does not make himself
out to be a hero, but instead, he underlines the importance the SAS played
in the Falkland Islands. Another thing that makes this book so unique
is his deep description of what selection was like. I definitely
recommend that anyone read this book!!

As
a member from the Belgian army I have to say that it has been a pleasure
reading CQB. It's one of the best books I have ever read. Mr Curtis takes
you into action time after time. It's almost like you are on the scene.
Mr Curtis made me bring up my deepest respect to all Commonwealth elite
soldiers and special forces.

Recently
finished the book. I had not read a book for 8 yrs. Fell over it at a friends
place, and after the first page I just couldn´t put it down. The
selection and SAS techniques are really excellent described. The way he
describes the different operations, maked me feel like being there. A must
read.

is great at discribing the selction process for the paras and the SAS.I
have the up most respect for the author and anyone who has served in these
regiments.

Having
served in the army and fought in the gulf, the falklands fascinates me,
as the last 'real' battle the british army fought. His language and description
of life in the paras and their time in the falklands together made me feel
very humble. This was the best part of the book for me, as everybody has
read about the gulf, SAS etc. The bosnia chapter was also extremely well
written, and brought back lots of memories!! Well done, great book.
