Green Berets In Korea
Story of 41 Independent
Commando Royal Marines in Korea
Cover Notes
In 1949, at the age of 17,
Fred Hayhurst volunteered for the Royal Marines. After 15 months
recruit training, a commando course and specialising in medium machine
guns and mortars, he was given his first overseas posting to Malaya.
This was changed and he was ordered to join the newly formed
41
Independent Commando for service in Korea. He has since organised reunions
for members of the Commando and with United States comrades who they served
with in Korea. He is also a member of the Chosin Few, an association,
based in the USA, for those who served in the Chosin Reservoir Campaign.
In 1990 he was voted on to the Board of Directors and in 1994 appointed
a Vice President of the Chosin Few. Green Berets in Korea is the story
of a small amphibious raiding force especially raised for service during
the Korean War, the first armed conflict fought under the flag of the United
Nations.

MY Uncle Gerad was in theis unit and lost his life in the units brave action in Korea. I am very proud of Gerad and of the sacrifice he made. I found the book very difficult to read becuase it has such an personal emotional aspect to me. However it is a very well written book and I would commend its reading to anyone who wants to acquire a clear factual account of the action this unit saw.
They were so young and brave, it breaks my heart that so many never saw England again.

Sir:
I have yet to find a copy of the book but am still trying.
I fought with a squad of the 41 Commando near Inchon, Korea in September, 1950 and met with a member of that squad at Hagaru-ri in December, 1950. I would be pleased to hear from a member of the 41 Commando.
After landing at Inchon I was detached from the 1st Sig.Bn, 1st Marine Division and provided Radio Liaison with the Special Operation Company, a recon oufit which included a squad of the 41 Commando.
I will be pleased to hear from someone.
Thank you and Semper Fi

The forward to the book
is by, Stephen G Olmstead Lieutenant General, United States Marine Corps, who
states as a young PFC in the Korean war who fought with the 1st USMC Division,That
this crucible of combat that inspired me for over 40 years of service in
the US Marine Corps and instilled my undying admiration for and professional
appreciation of 41 Independent Commando. Green Berets in Korea is a story
about noble men who performed magnificently under unbelievable circumstances.
I tip my helmet to the men who wore the green beret in Korea.

I thought this was an excellent
account of 41 Commando's contribution to the Korean War. The chapters covering
the Chosin campaign were very descriptive, and highlighted the bond between
the Royal Marines and their U.S. Marine bretheren in very trying (and in
some cases harrowing) circumstances. I have the utmost respect for everyone
who was there, and recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a Korean
War book about an individual unit as seen through the eyes of a veteran.
