I served some of my time with Martin Smelt as above (Hi Mart)and I too
found the book fascinating and interesting.Leslie Ives and I are of a different
generation however it is interesting how we as "squaddies" (former) seem to have the
same thoughts and feeling/mentality call it what you will about our role/duty as a
soldier.
Well done Les Ives and thanks for stirring some of my own memories in me. Who knows
you may just have inspired me to write my own book one day.

Bloody
good yarn Leslie, grass roots and enjoyed here by many. Cheers mate
and full marks to organisers (George?) of this site. Any bloke who's
come off the street and ever humped a pack in the J will relate one way
or the other. ALB.

I
believe it provides great insight into both the National Service and Malayan
"emergency" experiences as both receive little attention here in the USA.
As I knew little about the Malayan campaign, I think Mr. Ives' book gives
one the view of what the average "squaddie" had to deal with, not only
with
jungle
operations, yet with ordinary things such as basic training, garrison life
and his mandatory post-NS Territorial Army service. Great job Leslie!

Having spent time in the Infantry and a Yorkshire Regiment at that (1 P.W.O. Now 1st Yorks) I enjoyed this book very much. I serve from 1975 to 2000.
I never served in the jungle but have read many books on the subject.I did however do my training at Strenal and also served some time there later as a Corporal Instructor of Recruits. So I can see both sides of Les's story.
I found this book was a pleasure to read because it came from a voice in the Ranks and not ,as is usual, from higher ranks, therefore letting the 'man on the street' understand the military mentality etc.It also brought back to me many ,many found memories.
Thanks Les, A bloody good Book
Regards,
Martin Smelt
(Retired Infantryman).
