The Last Conflict Of
The Durham Light Infantry
Borneo 1966
Comments
I am the author of the book
.It is about claret operations in Borneo 1966. During an ambush we had
one man killed and nine wounded in Kalamantan jungle.Where we left many
casualties .Our company commander was awarded the military cross, a major
John Arnett. We carried our KIA and 5 wounded for ten miles back over the
boarder into Sarawak.

I agree with most of Goerge Blakde's comments with the exception of one
Lt Tim Kirk was wounded I should know as I was His signals operator during the
conflict. He was Flown to Singapore along with other wounded. And the walk out may
have been only a couple of miles but it seemed a hell of a time to get out.

It's already in the bin
This so called book is a mixture of half truths, conjecture and downright lies. It is mostly a figment of imagination, poorly written and an exercise in egomania. Some of the more obvious lies - There was no screaming hordes of Indonesians (we ambushed a patrol of 12, 6 were killed 6 w ere wounded). Maj JAG Arnott was not involved in shoot out. Lt Kirk was not wounded. No Indonesians were chased from the bunker (it was found abandoned and had not been used for some time). There was only 3 wounded (Lcpl Finn, pte Andy Simpson and Cpl Bartlett). Cpl Bartletts wound was so minor it needed only a fragment taken from his neck with out stitches or anaesthetic. The whole book is an exercise in self aggrandisement and reads as if a bunch of guys got together in a pub and swapped war stories with the usual exaggerations. I am in a position to slag this book as I was Maj Arnotts signaller (Company net) as well as being the company Intelligence rep. I was privy to all ra
dio transmissions made by the company commander and all signals received by him from the platoons. I was never more than the length of the wireless handset cord from the Major. I was also present at the debriefing session after the contact back in Gunan Gajak and also read intelligence reports received from agents across the border who saw the results of the contact. The wounded were carried no more than a couple of miles before a clearing was made to facillitate a helicopter winch up. There are too many fallacies to go into without writing the equivalent of a book myself. Needless to say the whole thing is a disgrace and an insult to the men who participated in the operation. I hope I never have to read such garbage again.
