Cover Notes

RAF a flight Lieutenant's John Peters, Pilot, and John Nichol, navigator, were the ordinary two man crew of a Tornado, when the Gulf War broke out.  Shot down by a Sam Missile, they became extraordinary when their tortured faces, battered almost beyond recognition by their Iraqi interrogators, flashed across the world's television screens.  In that instant they became the symbol of Saddam Hussein brutal regime, an image of suffering that was engraved on the public's mind.

Tornado Down is their story.  It is a graphic and painfully honest account of the hectic build up to war, the intense excitement of operational training and actual combat and, in sudden and stark contrast, the humiliation of imprisonment  and torture, followed in the aftermath of war by the heady emotions of release  and the pitfalls of unsolicited media attention that

By turns appalling, moving and improbably funny, Tornado Down is a riveting account of modern aerial warfare.  It is also the private voice of war, a triumphant affirmation that humanity can and does prevail in the face of abuse and suffering.

What a fantastic account of their ordeal. What can I say, funny, sad, scary and interesting. The chapters are short and sweet and highly recommend this to anyone who has any particular interest in the Royal Air Force and definetly to those who hope to go in as pilot as it gives detailed descriptions of the flight etc.

An amazing book - giving a unique insight into war, strength and human resolve! We are bombarded by the heroisms of american servicemen - it certainly brings it home when we can realise there are real British men and women out there doing it just as, if not more, incredibly! This book captures the raw, shocking and terribly painful truth to war and its victims - on both sides! A MUST READ!!!

Vinny Gibbs rated this book as Excellent
This book is an excellent account of the events and effects on two very excepional men. It has put you right in the front seat of a Tornado and manages to shake your emotions to there foundations. I am currently read the Lieutenant's second joint book "Team Tornado" which is just as gripping.

V good.  In some ways I would recommend reading "Team Tornado" (their 2nd book) first. Both are excellent

Bert rated this book as Excellent
I'm a Belgian reader. This book is good stuff ! Just like "Bravo Two Zero" it was reading like a locomotive and ASAP to the finish. This proves once again that some regimes and "cultures" have no problem at all with torture. This proves that not all men are equal. One can distinguish a good soldier on two points:
1.His tactical(in group and alone) and physical performance.
2.His behavior towards prisoners and civilians. The Iraqi's were bad soldiers.

Brillaint, i loved every second that i read that book. I have written a school book report for my GCSE on your book. It really made me think about my life in general. Peters and Nichol and all the other POW's are extremely brave. I had already been planning on joining the Air Force and your book has further encouraged me to do so. Brilliant in every meaning of the word.

Matthew McGinnis rated this book as It's already in the bin

Neil Chamberlain rated this book as Excellent
I think the book is brilliant. I've met John Nichol at "Waddington Air Show 2002" and I also met him the year before at another air show and bought the book "Exclusion Zone" (also brilliant) which he wrote and sighned for me. I just want to say how brave both John Nichol and John Peters were and still are. All the best...

Karla rated this book as Excellent
This has got to be the best ever book i've read, couldn't put it down for a second I always wanted to know what happens next. I would definetly recommend this book to anyone, it details the true encounter of how evil the iraqi soldiers can be & how brave John Peters, John Nichol & the other POW are.
