Cover Notes
An account of one trooper's uncompromising jungle war So soon after concluding operations in the pacific theatre of World War II, western powers were thrown back into military action in South East Asia, culminating with the Korean and Vietnam wars. An often forgotten episode of this era is the Malayan Emergency, in which British Commonwealth forces fought against the military arm of the Malayan Communist party. Fighting in dense tropical jungle against skilled guerrillas necessitated the rebirth of a regiment put-to-rest after the Second World War- the SAS.
Reformed as the Malayan Scouts, their task was to succeed where normal soldiering had failed and take the fight to the insurgents in the jungle, operating as guerrillas themselves. The Malayan Scouts SAS is the story of one soldier's experiences of SAS operations during the Malayan Emergency, fighting a ruthless enemy in a hostile environment. The British did not always cover themselves with glory, and it is a tale of mutiny, cruelty and violence as much as comradeship and bravery.
J.C. Durkin was born in Athy, Ireland in 1929. He joined the British Army in 1948, serving with the Lancashire Fusiliers. He transferred to the SAS in 1951 and was sent to Malaya to fight the communist insurgency. He served with the SAS and reserve until 1965. He lived in Manchester.
